Abstract

The study was conducted through a survey of 426 poor and near-poor households in Ninh Binh province to determine the impact of livelihood capital on the households' ability to escape poverty. A Binary Logistic model was used, whose independent variables are five types of livelihood capital: human capital, natural capital, financial capital, social capital, and physical capital. The analysis results show that financial capital plays the most crucial role in a household's ability to escape poverty. Specifically, households with higher per capita income and those that received loans tend to escape poverty. It is more difficult for the poor and nearpoor households with income from non-agricultural activities to escape poverty than those engaged in agriculture. Additionally, human capital, physical capital, and social capital all positively impact the ability to escape poverty, while natural capital has a negative impact. The study thus proposes several policies to improve livelihood capital for poor and near-poor households in Ninh Binh province.
