Abstract

Persistent absence is unequally distributed, but attendance alone is an incomplete measure of educational inclusion. This paper critically evaluates U Can Shine, a 12-week relational coaching and family-engagement programme at Nields Academy, followed by an eight-week applied-learning extension. Fourteen pupils in Years 3–5 participated; 12 were eligible for Pupil Premium and six had identified social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. A practitioner-led, single-site mixed-method case study examines paired attendance percentages for 13 pupils, selected stakeholder testimony and pupil work. Independent recalculation of the individual rates corrects a consequential error in the original manuscript: mean baseline attendance was 88.1%, not 89.0%; post-programme mean attendance was 96.3%, giving a mean paired increase of 8.2 percentage points. All 13 recorded cases improved, although the missing pupil’s outcome, unequal or unverified observation windows, selection on initial risk and absence of a comparison group prevent causal attribution. Pupil and family accounts suggest plausible pathways through trusted relationships, perceived belonging, manageable challenge and greater participation. These accounts were retrospective and largely collected within delivery. The case therefore offers evidence of an encouraging association and a testable organisational model, not proof of programme effectiveness or financial return. Further investment should depend on matched-window records, independent evaluation, academic and wellbeing outcomes, full costs and a credible comparison with existing support.
