Education and Prevention of Violence in Social Protests

Abstract

This article reflects on the role of education in preventing violence in social protests. This research arises in the context of the crises experienced worldwide, with protests being one of the ways in which popular discontent is demonstrated in the face of problems affecting society. The objective of this study is to reflect on the role of education in preventing violence in social protests in Mozambique. A qualitative methodology based on a review of existing literature on the subject was used for its elaboration. The relevance of this study lies in the need to raise awareness in Mozambican society about education in human values ​​that enable healthy coexistence, avoiding violence in conflict resolution. The results reveal that, internationally, peaceful protests are a right of citizens because they constitute a form of freedom of expression and contribute to the strengthening of human rights and democracy. However, in Mozambique, social protests have been violent, resulting in human and material damage, unemployment, and insecurity. Therefore, it is necessary for families and schools to educate Mozambicans not only in content and skills, but also in values ​​such as love for one's neighbor and country, respect for public and private property, as well as dialogue for solving problems. Furthermore, education must raise citizens' awareness of the need to participate in solving problems, contributing to the socio-economic development of the country through sustained employment and the creation of self-employment.
