Abstract

This exploratory qualitative study belongs to a series investigating factors that enhance or impede the growth, performance and development of small businesses and entrepreneurship in Africa, and recommending alternative strategies for progress. Noting that much of sub-Saharan Africa depends on exporting raw materials in low value-added forms, and that large amounts of borrowed and donated funds spent on industrial and SME development have produced unimpressive results, the study asks why this is so and which factors are responsible. Because African countries differ by former colonial zone, it examines Senegal as a Francophone case, drawing on the author's earlier research on small plastic manufacturing firms in Anglophone Nigeria. The study compares the distinguishing features of approximately 50 entrepreneurs operating small manufacturing firms in Senegal, highlighting issues of identity, regional affiliation and entrepreneurial strategy, and asks what principal factors influence firm performance, growth and development, why some firms are more successful than others, and whether these factors differ from those found in Anglophone countries such as Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya. The firms are classified by established small-firm typologies, divided according to whether or not they received external support, especially financial assistance, and examined using Schumpeter's theory of entrepreneurship and development. The literature review covers external support, funding sources, the role of government, the economic environment and constraints on small firm growth.
