Abstract

This editorial discusses how integrated biodesign-related and translational platforms can support co-development and the adoption of innovative biotechnologies, and considers the future of the healthcare and life science bioindustry. The authors argue that even the most innovative healthcare technologies benefit patients only when they are adopted by clinicians and patients in actual practice, so that co-development between innovators and customers is a key agile principle. They note that accelerating innovation to improve quality is a policy target for health systems around the world and that several innovation pathways have been established to encourage the invention, development and implementation of cost-effective technologies. The editorial notes that discoveries from basic life-science research are now applied more rapidly and broadly, and calls for a strategy to drive biotechnology toward a knowledge-based bio-economy. It highlights needs-based innovation, influenced by design thinking, as an alternative strategy for biomedical product development, and proposes the integration of clinician interaction platforms, biodesign, bioengineering and translational applications, advanced biomanufacturing platforms, and the bioindustry and bioeconomy. The authors also discuss multidisciplinary bioengineering, the risks of engineered viruses, the open question of whether biomedical incumbents and major technology players will compete or collaborate, and the role of design-driven innovation and entrepreneurship, including biodesign startups that need scalable business models and innovative biomarketing strategies.
