- Prologue
- It is an honor for any journalist to be able to pass of knowledge of a great personality, of a man who made history. on to new and future generations the treasures I therefore consider it a privilege to conduct this long interview with a founding father of Italian and international medicine like Giulio Tarro, whose adventures as a scientist and a man constitute a memorable lesson, not only for the education of doctors and researchers, but also for humanity as a whole. Serving from a very young age only for one master, the pursuit of truth and the common good, Tarro defied academic barons to strenuously preserve scientific research from economic and political interests of any kind, to the point of being considered almost a “heretic.” Well, if there had been more “heretical” scientists like him, the world would certainly be a better place today. Therefore, despite having achieved prestigious positions at the highest levels thanks to his extraordinary scientific discoveries, Giulio Tarro has always remained what any doctor should be: first and foremost a person, capable of combining, before his patients, the immense gifts of his knowledge with the empathetic ability to be close, proximate, and profoundly human. As readers will discover throughout the pages of this book, the cornerstone of his personality is in fact his ability to practice medicine and research while always guided by a guiding star: humanism, respect for the human condition whatever it may be, love for one’s neighbor, and the passionate pursuit of good and, above all, just science. Readers will find Giulio Tarro’s extensive biography, studded with achievements and accolades, in the Appendix. But here, in the introduction, I’d like to point out that it was he himself who, over the years, has chronicled his experiences with the mastery of a master journalist. Author of nearly a thousand publications, including books and articles, Tarro ranges from the rigor expected of the world’s leading researchers, with articles in leading international medical journals (see, for example, the wealth of scientific papers published in English, including recently, in the British Medical Journal), to thousands of pages showcasing his humanity and brilliant style. It’s no coincidence that he’s been a freelance journalist for many years and was the editor-in-chief of the Singapore Journal of Vaccine Research and Development. And this also explains why, in this long book-length interview, Professor Giulio Tarro, emeritus head physician at the Cotugno Hospital in Naples, answers the interviewer’s questions with an eloquence that captivates readers. Just as his entire life journey is captivating.
